Firebox backhead

Work continues on the boiler overhaul. The majority of the welding and rivetting is now complete, and work is progressing on the new stays.

This picture, with the boiler still standing upside-down, shows the backhead with the new central section welded in place, and rivetting completed around the foundation ring and the firehole ring. The row bright parts lower down in the picture are new bushes in the stay holes.
Firebox side

A view of the right side of the firebox, showing new foundation rivets, new stay bushes, and stay holes yet to be drilled in the new platework.
Firebox foundation ring corner

A view of the front left corner of the firebox foundation ring. The right side of the picture is the front of the firebox, i.e. the throatplate. The left side of the picture is the left side of the firebox, where the foundation rivet heads are flattened for the limited clearance against the main frame. On the outside of the corner are two patch screws, necessary because there is no room inside for rivets; one still has its spanner head not yet snapped off.
Front tubeplate

The new front tubeplate rivetted in place.
Tender paintwork

A view showing the new paintwork on the tender.
