British Railways Standard Class 4MT
2-6-4 Tank Locomotive No 80064
This locomotive is no longer at the Bluebell Railway
In service on the Bluebell in 1986 - Mike Esau
The last in a long line of large tank locomotives to have been
built at Brighton Works, the Standard 4 tanks were closely
associated with the last years of the Bluebell Line under British
Railways. 80064 was allocated new to Watford shed (1C) from 9
June 1953 before being transferred to Dover (73H) on 31 December
1959. Further transfers occurred to Ashford (73F) on 9th February
1960 and Tonbridge (73J) on 26 May 1961. Following the final part
of the Kent Coast Electrification, it was shedded at Exmouth
Junction (72A) from 2 July 1962. After regional boundary changes,
72A shed and its locomotives later came under Western Region
control. On 13 June 1965, 80064 was transferred to Bristol Barrow
Road (82E) and was subsequently withdrawn for scrapping from
there in August 1965.
It was one of over 200 other locos sent to
Barry scrapyard that were subsequently rescued for preservation,
in this case by a group based on the Dart Valley Railway where it
was restored to working order in 1981. In 1984 its owners decided
to transfer it to the Bluebell, and it worked out the remainder
of its boiler certificate in fine style in Sussex. Since then it
has been back to Devon and subsequently returned again to the
Bluebell in 1997, but with no overhaul in prospect at the Bluebell, moved to the West Somerset Railway in 2023.
Jon Horrocks' photos above show the locomotive in service on the Bluebell, at Horsted Keynes, during the 1980s, and on display in the loco shed at Sheffield Park in 2010. More of Jon's photos of 80064 are here.
The photo on the right, supplied to the Bluebell Archive by Jim Lofts, an ex-Fireman from Stratford shed in London in the 1950s, shows the engine being transported to the Bluebell on a Wynns low loader in 1984.
